Thank you Mrs. Barnes for calling and letting me know of Mary's passing. It is truly a shock. Even though I hadn't talked to Mary for several years, she was often in my thoughts. I will cherish the memories of my college roomie at ECU and as a bridesmaid in my wedding. My heartfelt sympathies to you and your family.

My husband and I were truly shocked to hear this morning that Mary Hollis had died. We had not seen her for several months, but we knew her well before we retired from Archives and History. As her supervisor for many years, I had great respect for her judgment, her integrity, her thoroughness, and her professional knowledge. But she was also a colleague and friend--cheerful, upbeat, funny, always willing to help, and truly interested in the people she worked with and those she served. We were very sorry that we were unable to come to the service today. We send our deepest sympathies to her family and friends, whom she loved dearly.

Mary was a very special person to me, not only as a colleague, but as a friend. I worked with her at the State Archives for nearly 25 years. We started out together working on Saturdays and summers in the 1980s in the Search Room. We both graduated from the public history program at N.C. State University. In 1996 I moved to Historical Publications and she worked in the same building (Old Records Center) for awhile. In the last few years, she moved into a position with the Cemetery Survey, a modification of a job I had held many years earlier. She consulted me on the work I had done back in the 1980s and early 1990s and she improved upon it. Mary was always extremely meticulous in everything she did and she always had her way of doing things. I will truly miss a dear, dear person.

I will sorely miss her enthusiasm and respect she has shown to me and my fellow co-workers. I know Mary is in a very special place with her love ones who passed on before her. May God Bless her and her family.

Please accept my heartfelt sympathy and prayers. Mary was both a co-worker and a dear friend for well over twenty-five years. When I retired as Registrar for the North Carolina State Archives, she filled in my position. Her knowledge, experience, and always cheerful personality were her trademarks, even in the event of her difficult illness, which she supported with true Christian serenity. She will be missed, but not forgotten. Her legacy is a lifetime of true professionalism and many contributions to preserving the history of our state.
