Dixon Jr., John L. "Buck"

John L. “Buck” Dixon, Jr.
April 28, 1941 – April 10, 2012

John L. “Buck” Dixon, Jr., 70, of Elm City passed away on Tuesday.  Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday at First Baptist Church, Wilson.  Interment will follow in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Elm City.  The Rev. Steve Stephenson and Dr. Douglas Murray will officiate.

The family will receive friends 6 - 9 p.m. Thursday at Joyner’s Funeral Home, 4100 Raleigh Road Parkway and other times at 5120 Pridgen Road, Elm City.

Buck was born to the late John L. Dixon, Sr. and Nellie Dawes Dixon, April 28, 1941 in Wilson, NC.  Buck spent his early childhood in Elm City, moving with his family to Bradenton, Fla., when he was ten years old.  He graduated from Manatee High School in Bradenton in 1960.  He attended Atlantic Christian College before joining the U.S. Army, serving 1960 – 1963.  Following his military service, he lived in St. Louis, MO for a short time where he worked for McDonnell Douglas.  He returned to Elm City in 1963 and began working for Durward Stancil as a refrigeration and air conditioning mechanic, a trade he learned while in the Army. He eventually opened his own refrigeration and air conditioning business.  In 1969, Buck became the owner of Silver Lake Oyster Bar which is still in business today.

Buck was a husband, father, successful businessman, and a friend to many people in many places.  He was a longtime fan of the Washington Redskins, an accomplished fisherman and golfer, and was a true Southerner who loved to grow his own vegetables.  A generous philanthropist, Buck frequently donated time and money to numerous charities, got great satisfaction in privately supporting personal acquaintances in need and as an employer, he served as a mentor and friend to many employees.  An active participant in the Wilson community, Buck served as a member of the Chamber of Commerce, the N.C. Restaurant Association, the Wilson County Small Business Association and the Wilson County Health Department.

Buck was preceded in death by his parents, his stepmother Adna Leigh (Janie) Pridgen Dixon, and his brother James Dawes Dixon.

He is survived by his wife Cindy Boyette Dixon of the home; daughters, Lisa Dixon Lowery (Ashley) of Wilson, Mary Lynne Dixon Carraway (Mark) of Elm City, Deborah Dixon Dion (Christian) of Garner, NC, Renee Dixon Brown (Robbie) of Wilson; stepson, William Lester Woolard of Elm City.  Buck is survived by his sisters, Mollie Dawes Kluge (Larry) of Elm City and Sarah Rose Dixon and Nellie Jane Vick both of Wilson.  Buck was granddaddy to seven grandchildren; Grey, Daniel, Avery Rose, Genevieve, Ethan, Joshua and Rachel.  Buck also leaves behind the dogs he loved, Stinky, Runt and Bo.

Flowers are welcome or memorials may be directed to the charity of one’s choice.

I went to school with Lisa and Lynne. I want to offer you girls my deepest condolences. Me and my family were patrons of Silver Lake Oyster Bar for as long as I can remember. Buck was always so kind and hospitable. Some of my fondest childhood memories were of our family friday night dinners at Silver Lake...a family tradition. Wilson has lost a great businessman. Again, Lisa and Lynne, my sympathies to you and your families.

I am deeply saddened by the news of the passing of my Uncle Buck. To my family my prayers and thoughts are with you all. I will always cherish the memories I have of Uncle Buck especially when I worked at the restuarant. The other memory I will never forget is when he walked into the church the day of my wedding. I was so surprised and happy to see him and his girls. It meant so much to me and my wife to have him there to share in our special day. I am sorry I cannot be there but know that I am thinking and praying for you all. Uncle Buck was a wonderful and giving person and he will be missed.

I am so sorry to hear of the loss of Buck. I just found out a few minutes ago. Buck has been a friend for over 30 years. I use to play a lot of golf with Buck and G. C. Thompson as well as other friends. I always enjoyed eating at the restaurant. I took my wife Paulette there on our first date 28 years ago. Buck use to come to Goldsboro and play golf with us also. He will surely be missed by everyone who knew him. He was a first class individual.

This is a tragedy that affects all the Dixon family. Not only the direct family members, but the extended family as well. Cindy, special prayers go out to you and your children as I know how it is to lose someone so special and dear to our hearts. Although, I did not know Mr. Buck that well, I know he was a wonderful husband, father, granddaddy, brother, and uncle. Buck was a special person, who loved and enjoyed life and was a man who wore a hat of many colors. As we can only imagine how the immediate family is, however it's unfortunate we will not be able to be there with the immediate family as we only stubbled across this tragedy today by a very special person on Facebook. My husband John and his brother Lawrence will be devastated to hear the news regarding their uncle this evening. We know he is in peace and I just hope the rest of the family is too.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss of Buck. I personally did not know him, but he was very generous to me back in 1986. A mutual friend said he had season tickets to Redskin games and I loved the NY Giants. I asked if he did not go could I buy the tickets because I had never seen an NFL game and I wanted to do so badly. He sold me the tickets at face value and I took my brother who was a Redskin fan to see them play the Giants. It was a huge game in old RFK Stadium and the Giants went on to win that game and eventually the Super Bowl. I will never forget my first experience to see my Giants with a Redskin fan's tickets and it was all because of Buck. Thank You Buck for your generosity.
