My deepest sympathy to Dewey and other members of Emily's family. She will be remembered with great affection by those involved with the museum in Smithfield honoring Emily's close friend, Ava Gardner. Always kind and caring, Emily in her later years was more youthful mentally than many young women, and she left an indelible impression wherever she went. Those who knew her for a lifetime or only a brief while can be truly thankful for their very special EMILY SHEFFIELD EXPERIENCE.

I really didn't know what to say when I heard of this. I found out yesterday. She was one of the sweetest people I have ever known and it really hurt my heart to hear about it, especially since I had not seen her in a few years. She had and will always have a special place in my heart and I hope that she knew that I cared about her dearly. My prayers are with her family and everyone that she touched with her kindness. With so much love, Jennifer Simmons.

Emily was one of the most thoughtful and generous people that I have known. It has meant so much to be included with the family gatherings and to have known all her family and close friends. Dewey, Mary and Roger, Deebai, Bryan, Emily and Grace my heart goes out to you. Cherish your memories. The world has lost a real treasure!

Thoughts and prayers are with the family of Mrs. Emily Sheffield. I have spoken with her on many occasions however, never had the pleasure of meeting her face to face. She was a very sweet lady and she will truly be missed. To Mr. Dewey Sheffield, you have my deepest condolences and prayers that you find the strength needed to help you through the days to come.

Dewey & Mary, I had the pleasure of knowing your mother for most of my life. When I was a little girl she would come into the beauty shop and tell me stories of her life. Then when I was older with kids of my own, they would come home after being in the beauty shop and tell me about the stories of her life that she would tell to them. As I listened to the girls repeat what they had been told I couldn't help but smile, because I could hear her telling me these same stories. Each time I heard them, both as a child and as an adult, they always felt like magic, like she had the greatest life I could ever imagine. We loved her dearly and will miss her. I would like for you both to know how wonderful we thought your mother was. I will miss seeing her when I come home to visit, but I will be forever grateful that I was blessed enough to have known her. Your entire family will be in our thoughts and prayers. We are sending our love to you all, from Ohio.

Mrs. Sheffield was my 2nd grade (i think) teacher at Eliza Poole Elementary School in Raleigh. I am 51 yrs old, so this tells you how long ago that was. She is one of the few teachers who made such an impact on me that I have never forgotten her. My thoughts and prayers are with you, her family and friends, during this difficult time. I hope it will serve as a comfort to you all to know that her memory will live on in those of us whose life she made such a difference.
