Tuesday, October 20 was entered with heavy hearts. We understood that time was closing but chose to celebrate Eddie regardless. Surrounded by his closest family, we played beach music and oldies until the end. Eddie was known for his big personality, infectious laugh, and loving heart that was completely devoted to his family and friends. Affectionately known as “The Big D,” Eddie bought smiles into a room. He lived his life with determination, generosity, a strong work ethic, and an unwavering love for the people who mattered most to him.

Originally from Salem, North Carolina, Eddie attended North Carolina State University in 1961, where he earned a degree in Economics. During his senior year, he took an appraisal course that unexpectedly changed the direction of his life. What began as a single college class grew into a distinguished career spanning more than 50 years. Eddie established Dozier Appraisal & Realty, building a successful business through hard work, dedication, and the genuine relationships he formed along the way. He truly loved his work, the career he built, and the countless people he met through it.

Eddie’s involvement in 4-H also played a pivotal role in shaping his life, though perhaps not in the way he originally expected. In 8th grade, Eddie met Bennie at a livestock show, and through Bennie, he met Faye. The rest, as they say, is history. Eddie and Faye were inducted into the 4-H Hall of Fame in 2016.

Eddie and Faye shared 62 years of marriage, creating a life filled with love, laughter, and lasting memories. Their family grew when they adopted their son, Chris, in December 1975, and their daughter, Susanne, in December 1978, through the North Carolina Children's Home in Greensboro. Together, they built a home grounded in love, rich in traditions, and filled with opportunities that will be treasured for generations.

Eddie was a provider in every sense of the word. He worked tirelessly to ensure his family was always cared for and never wanted for anything. He was a fighter for the people he loved, showing his affection through his actions, sacrifices, and steadfast determination to give his family the best life possible. He extended that warm protection to everyone around him. If you mattered to someone Eddie loved, you mattered to him, too.

Life with Eddie was never dull. He patiently measured quilt squares for Faye to cut, attended countless ballets, band concerts, and games. He always cheered on NC State. Eddie offered math advice and street directions to whoever would listen, and he filled our hearts with beach and mountain memories. He encouraged everyone’s dreams, challenged his own hidden talents in writing and photography, and loved spending time dragging rows on the tractor or golf cart, planting sunflower and vegetable seeds. He had three very specific, very good signature meals he often prepared, each reliably served with a can of Le Sueur peas and homemade macaroni and cheese. These ordinary, everyday moments became extraordinary memories, serving as simple reminders of a man whose presence brightened daily life.

Over the last several years, Eddie faced significant health challenges. True to the fighter he had always been, he met those obstacles with strength, determination, and an unshakable belief that he could overcome them. He continued to battle, refusing to give up, just as he had fought for his loved ones throughout his life.

Eddie was a strong man who will be missed tremendously. His absence will be deeply felt in the quiet moments around the dinner table, during family gatherings, and in all the places where his unmistakable laugh once echoed.

Yet the true measure of a life is not found simply in how long it was lived or what was accomplished, but in the people who were loved, the opportunities made possible, and the memories left behind. The lives Eddie touched are forever changed and immeasurably better because we knew and loved him. His legacy continues in the kindness we extend to others, the determination to keep going, and the love we share with one another.

The Big D may no longer fill a room with his laughter, but the love he put into this world will continue to fill our lives for generations to come.
