Charles Harold Crumpler, more commonly known as “Sam”, 75, of Lucama, North Carolina, passed away on November 5, 2025. Born August 23, 1950, in Wilson County, Sam was the son of late Horace Crumpler and Mildred Hayes Crumpler.
A very proud veteran, Sam served his country honorably in the United State’s Army before building a second career at Johnston County Correction Center, from which he also retired. Not one to sit idle, he also operated a lawn care business, where his reliability and work ethic earned him a great name in the community. Sam loved watching NASCAR, football, basketball, and catfishing at Kerr Lake.
Sam’s strength, leadership, and tender heart were among his most defining traits. He was always willing to help others, even running a small food bank out of his house to help those in need. During this time, he earned the endearing nickname “Daddy Rabbit” after showing up to hand out food with a huge bag of carrots. He meant so much to those he helped.
Sam was preceded in death by three brothers, Roy Crumpler, Johnny Crumpler, and Tommy Crumpler and a sister, Connie Parrish. He is survived by his brother Ronnie Flowers (Ann), and his two sisters, Janet Flowers and Elizabeth “Lib” Ferrell.
Sam’s most treasured gift was his family, including his daughter and his grandchildren. Sam had one daughter, Angela Shimel (Joseph…his “favorite son-in-law”), four grandchildren, Loren (Ian), Bradley, Owen, and Mackenzie (Landon), two great-grandchildren, Jaxtyn and Tatum and his dog Little Man. Sam also had numerous nieces and nephews, whom he loved.
Sam’s memorial service, including military honors, will be held Sunday, November 9th at Connect Church in Wilson at 2pm. A time of visitation will follow.
Condolences directed to Joyner’s Funeral Home and Crematory at www.joyners.net.
