Dolan Henry Atkinson, 90, of Lucama passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 30, 2026. He requested that in lieu of a funeral or visitation, a graveside service be held to celebrate his life. The service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 4, 2026, in Evergreen Memorial Park. The Rev. Kelley Smart will officiate.
Dolan was a devoted family man, community leader, and friend to many. His life was marked by service, kindness, generosity and strength. A dedicated worker, Dolan was employed at Lilley International until the remarkable age of 85. He truly loved his job and was a mentor and friend to many co-workers and customers. He was a proud member of the first volunteer fire department for the Town of Lucama. He also served the Town as mayor for eight years, where he was known for his integrity and commitment to the town he loved. Beyond his work and civic duties, Dolan found joy in cooking meals for his Little Rock Church community and caring for his beloved cats.
Dolan is survived by his son, Michael Atkinson and wife, Ginny of Wilson; grandsons, Brandon McMurray of Lucama and Garrett Barnes of Wilson; son-in-law, Ricky McMurray of Lucama; and sister, Edna Williamson and husband Donald of Kenly.
Dolan was preceded in death by his wife of thirty-eight years, Betty Atkinson; his beloved daughters, Deborah Clayton and Donna McMurray; sister Edith Askew, and his parents, Nathan and Ruth Atkinson.
The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to Shelia and Sharese and the staff of Parkwood Village as well as Megan Spivey and the staff of Gentiva Hospice.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Little Rock Free Will Baptist Church, PO Box 419, Lucama, North Carolina 27851.
Condolences directed to Joyner’s Funeral Home and Crematory at www.joyners.net.
