Coleman Cain Markham, 87, of Wilson, North Carolina, completed his earthly pilgrimage on Friday, July 18, 2025.
Born in Durham on October 6, 1937, he was the son of Daniel Coleman Markham and Gladys Cain Markham. He graduated from Wake Forest University and earned a Ph.D. in religious studies from Vanderbilt University. A lifelong educator, he served as a professor of religion for more than forty years, retiring in 2007 as Professor Emeritus at Barton College.
A gentle scholar and devoted minister, Coleman found beauty in both ancient scripture and the poetry of Walt Whitman. Ordained in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), he pastored Wilbanks Christian Church, Gold Point Christian Church, Westview Christian Church, and Southwest Christian Church with quiet faithfulness. He also shared his musical gifts in worship, serving as minister of music at Divine Street Methodist Church in Dunn, North Carolina.
Affectionately known as “Doc,” a nickname earned during his years directing Camp Piankatank in Virginia, Coleman nurtured young leaders with patience, humor, and wisdom. There, and throughout his life, he formed enduring friendships and led by quiet example.
A passionate traveler and lifelong learner, he guided generations of students on study tours across the globe, turning lessons into experiences and classrooms into communities. His warmth and curiosity bridged cultures, and many students came to regard him not only as a teacher but as a lifelong friend.
At home, Coleman cultivated both roses and ideas. His garden, like his mind, was carefully tended and generously shared. His sharp wit and open heart left a lasting mark on all who knew him.
He seemed to live by the quiet conviction of William Perkins, who wrote:
“We must take heed not only of our doing good things, but of doing them well.”In all he did—teacher, minister, father, friend—Coleman sought to do things well.
He was preceded in death by his parents and by his beloved wife, Johnsie Russell Markham.
He is survived by his son, Russell Coleman Markham; his daughter, Susan Markham Gregory; his son-in-love, Kenneth Michael “Bo” Gregory; and his grandsons, Markham Hughes Gregory and Russell Banks Gregory. He is also remembered by a wide circle of friends, former students, and colleagues whose lives bear the imprint of his kindness and care.
The family will receive visitors on Monday, July 21, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Joyner’s Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, July 22, at 2 p.m. at First Christian Church in Wilson, with Rev. Bobby White officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Wilbanks Christian Church, c/o Mr. Sam Letchworth, 7337 Batts Road, Macclesfield, NC 27852.
