Jimmy Wayne Poythress

Jimmy Wayne Poythress, 83 of Elm City passed away Saturday, May 4, 2024.   Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 7, 2024, at Shenandoah Baptist Church, 3894 Shenandoah Court, Rocky Mount.  Interment will follow in Thompson Chapel Church Cemetery, 5620 Thompson Chapel Road, Wilson.  Rev. Glenn Hill and Rev. Tim Parker will officiate.

The family will receive friends from 12:30 – 1:45 p.m. Tuesday at Shenandoah Baptist Church, Rocky Mount.

Jimmy served his country with honor and pride, and he truly lived by the motto, “once a Marine, always a Marine, Semper-Fi”.  He was a man of great faith, and though he loved his family dearly, he was confident of his place in his heavenly home.  Jimmy loved his church family at Shenandoah Baptist, where he participated in helping with many church events and activities.  One was fixing popcorn bags, which earned him the nickname, “The Popcorn Man”.  Jimmy was an avid sports fan, especially racing, where he enjoyed being part of the Proctor Racing Team.  Jimmy loved all his family, but his grandchildren and great-grandchildren were his top priority, and he always made a special effort to be present at their activities.  Jimmy was greatly loved, and he will be dearly missed.

Jimmy is survived by his loving wife of thirty-five years, Judy Poythress; daughters, Kim Strother and husband, Michael, Pam Saunders and husband, Steve, and Kathy Sherrod and husband, Ray; son, Kevin Poythress and wife, Suzanne; grandchildren, Ryan, Jordyn and Logan Saunders, Kristina Simpson, Bailey Poythress, Taylor and Austin Poythress, and Hunter, Walt, and Will Parker; great-grandchildren, Logyn, Alexis, Bentley, Drake, and Kinsley; sister, Ruby Glover, and his fur baby and companion, Lucy.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. Willard and Lucille Poythress; sisters, Dot Rose, Barbara Boykin, and Lynda Campbell; brother, Billy Poythress; niece, Jennifer Bacon, and nephew, Michael Poythress.
