Linwood Harding “Sonny” Scott, Jr. (1947-2026) passed away on April 17, 2026. Sonny left this earth peacefully surrounded by his family and friends who were the foundation and beneficiaries of a life he chose to live to its fullest every day.
He was born on October 20, 1947, into a family steep in agriculture tradition, and dedicated his life’s work to the industry. Through hard work, cutting edge thinking, calculated risk taking, and fair-trade practices he grew his family farm into a multinational corporation over his career. He received numerous awards for his accomplishments and gave unselfishly of his time back to agriculture by serving and holding office on various industry trade groups and board of directors.
Sonny was regarded as a great farmer and entrepreneur, but he will always be remembered as a man with great integrity and selfless nature. He held his family as his greatest accomplishment and always put them first in his life. Although he chose a profession defined by hard work and long hours, he never allowed his work life to interfere with his family. No event was too great to prevent him being there to watch his kids play ball, volunteer as a coach or just be there to support them in their endeavors. He epitomized the term “Family First” through the examples he set for his family to live by.
Sonny was as a generous man, frequently giving of his time and resources to help others in his community. He was a member of Marsh Swamp Original Free Will Baptist Church, serving in many different capacities there. Always willing to help when needed, he was a mentor for many in the agriculture community by freely sharing his experience and knowledge with others. Over the years he contributed financially to numerous causes and charities, almost always refusing to accept recognition for it.
His accomplishments throughout his life and career were numerous, but within his closest circle, he was just “Sonny”, “Dad” or “Grandaddy”. His zest for life and his passion for living every day to its fullest were infectious to all who knew him. Sonny Scott lived his life never having to apologize for who he was, and that’s what made him such a great husband, father, grandfather, and friend. That is what we will miss the most.
Sonny is survived by his loving wife of fifty-eight wonderful years, Alice Scott; sons, Linwood H. Scott, III and wife, Kim of Lucama, and Dewey R. Scott and wife, Heather of Lucama; granddaughters, Jena S. Petway and husband, Reid of Lucama and Lindsey Rebecca Scott Abraham and husband, Dallas of Wilson; grandsons, Linwood “Lin” H. Scott, IV, Dewey “DJ” R. Scott, Jr. and Charlie E. Scott all of Lucama; great-grandchildren, William Petway and Briggs Petway, and his sister, Edith Flowers and husband, Woody of Rock Ridge.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 20, 2026, in Marsh Swamp OFWB Church, Rock Ridge. Rev. Ray Wells will officiate.
The family will receive friends Sunday evening, April 19, 2026, from 5 – 7:30 p.m. at Joyner’s Funeral Home, 4100 Raleigh Road Parkway, Wilson.
