He served with honor with the U.S. Army stationed in Nome, Alaska. In 1954, Melvin married Peggy Ann Cherry and for sixty-seven years was a devoted husband to Peggy and a loving father to their daughter, Jennifer. Melvin worked with Whitley Electric and Bridgestone Firestone. Retirement allowed him to pursue his love of working and spending time with his wife, family and friends in their beautiful backyard. Traveling to ballgames to see his granddaughter, Jennifer, who was the apple of his eye, to play sports and later to enjoy his two great-grandsons which brought many smiles to his face. Duke basketball was a favorite and the games were not to be missed or discussed if they lost. As a faithful Christian and member of Tabernacle Baptist Church for sixty years, he was involved in many capacities, mainly as usher and deacon. Additionally, Wilson Christian School was dear to his heart where he served on the board for twenty-four years and valued every student. Melvin is survived by his loving wife, Peggy Cherry Tyndall; daughter, Jennifer Tyndall White and husband, Bobby; granddaughter, Jennifer White Freeman and husband, Kirk; two great-grandsons, John Walston White Freeman, and William Harrison Freeman; sister, Elizabeth Tyndall Stokes and husband, Frank of Wilson; niece, Kimberly T. Craig and husband, Ryan of Charlotte; nephew, Allen C. Kearney and great niece, Christy Ramirez and husband, Jose and their children, Alaina Gail and Marissa Gracelyn Ramirez all of Eureka. The family wishes to express appreciation to the Wilson Medical Center Emergency Department for their intense effort, care, and coordination with UNC Chapel Hill.
