Muriel Mercer Stancil

Muriel Mercer Stancil, 92, of Wilson, North Carolina, recently of Richmond, Virginia, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on March 8, 2022. A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, March 14, 2022, at Forest Hills Baptist Church, 1407 Forest Hills Road, Wilson. Rev. Mark Harrell will officiate. Interment will follow in Maplewood Cemetery.

The family will receive friends prior to the service from 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. at Forest Hills Baptist Church.

Muriel was the seventh of eleven children born to the late Dock and Sadie Mercer. She graduated from Rock ridge High School and continued her education at the Carolina General School of Nursing. Muriel worked at the Carolina Clinic for most of her career; she was a dedicated nurse who loved caring for her patients. She was a longtime member of Forest Hills Baptist church, where she sang in the choir for many years and was an active member of her Sunday School Class. Muriel loved to play piano and sing hymns, read, take long walks, and visit her beach house on Topsail Island with her husband, Ray and their friends. She truly had a servant’s heart.

Muriel is survived by her two daughters, Sharon Howard (Bradford) and Melissa “Missy” Pflaeging; two grandsons, Taylor Howard and Jordan Howard (Ariel); two granddaughters, Carolina Howard and Mathilda Pflaeging; two great-grandsons, Avery and Anthony Howard; two brothers, Louis and Newton Mercer; two sisters, Yvonne Barnes and Joyce Malpass; a special sister-in-law, Janice Stancil; her furry feline companion, LuLu, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Roy A. “Ray” Stancil; a daughter, Susan Plyler and six brothers and sisters.
