Nancy Marie McIntyre

Nancy McIntyre was born on July 29, 1958, in Rocky Mount. She was the only daughter of Mabel Roberson McIntyre, a public-school teacher, and William Hoyt McIntyre, a heavy equipment operator. Her father died after a long illness when she was just six, and Nancy spent most of her youth at Caswell Center in Kinston. As an adult she lived in several group homes and a supervised apartment before moving back to her mother's home in Stanhope after Mabel retired from teaching.

Taking after her civically active mother, Nancy was very sociable and never met a stranger. She particularly liked babysitting children and helping elderly people in the neighborhood. She was good with her hands and usually had an embroidery project to work on. In her younger days she participated in the Special Olympics, where she won many medals. She also enjoyed taking pictures, like her older brother Will, a professional photographer. She was very fond of music and sang solos every Christmas at the Stanhope Baptist Church. She was a superfan of "The Andy Griffith Show" and could recite whole scenes from memory.

After her mother's death in 2016, Nancy moved to the mountains of Western North Carolina to be closer to her brother and his wife. In the mountains she met and lived with Roxann Jones, the woman she would come to call her second mother. Roxann and her husband, Mike, welcomed Nancy into their home, and she was part of their family for seven years.

Nancy passed away peacefully in her sleep at Life Care Center in Hendersonville, where she was in rehab following hip replacement surgery. She is survived by her brother, Will; her sister-in-law, Deni; Roxann and Mike Jones of Rosman, and their family; her best friend, Mandy Buchanan; and her canine "niece," Cookie.

Nancy will be interred beside her parents in Oakdale Cemetery, E Branch Street, Spring Hope on Sunday, October 8, 2023, at 1 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Mabel McIntyre Scholarship Fund at NCCAT, the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching, 276 NCCAT Drive, Cullowhee, NC 28723.

Condolences directed to Joyner’s Funeral Home and Crematory at www.joyners.net.
