Peggy Cherry Tyndall

Peggy Cherry Tyndall, 87 of Wilson passed away sleeping peacefully at the Cottage at Spring Arbor on Wednesday, January 25, 2023.  She was born at home in Pitt County, on April 27, 1935 to Thelma Warren Cherry and George Rufus Cherry.  A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, January 29, 2023, at Tabernacle Baptist Church, 1815 Airport Boulevard NW, Wilson.  Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park, Wilson.  Rev. Joe Shakour will officiate.

The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 6 – 8 p.m. at Joyner’s Funeral Home, 4100 Raleigh Road Parkway, Wilson.

Peggy graduated from Charles L. Coon, class of 54.  She married the love of her life, Melvin Tyndall in 1954, their marriage was a loving marriage of sixty-six years between a city girl and a country boy.  Peggy met her future husband when he rode to Wilson with a friend that was dating her sister, they met and fell in love.  She worked for Forbes Transfer company for forty plus years.  Melvin and Peggy were members of the Tabernacle Baptist Church for sixty-one years.  Peggy loved the Lord and her church family and served in any way she could, mainly teaching Sunday school and serving on the hospitality committee for forty plus years.  She earned the title of “Doctor of Hospitality”.

Peggy had a servants heart, her compassion for people was invaluable as she volunteered in many areas including Wilson Memorial Hospital waiting rooms, she shared comforting words and deeds with waiting families and was there for them with whatever they needed.  Peggy also volunteered as a hospice volunteer and worked on the elections board during elections.  She was woman of the year of the Willow Springs Home Extension Club, and was a former president of the Wilson Ladies Bowling Association.  Peggy was a wonderful cook; coconut cake was Melvin’s favorite.  At church homecomings some members learned that a big pot of chicken pastry was on the stove in the church kitchen and slipped in to enjoy.  Peggy loved her family dearly, she was spoiled by her son-in-law, and she never missed an event or a ball game that her granddaughter was involved in.  She was ecstatic to have two great-grandsons, although they are young, she was grateful for the years she had with them.

Peggy is survived by her daughter, Jennifer Tyndall White and husband, Bobby of Wilson; granddaughter, Jennifer White Freeman and husband, Kirk of Raleigh; two great-grandsons, John Walston White Freeman, 7, and William Harrison Freeman, 4, both of Raleigh; sister, Shirley Cherry Galloway of Wilson; sister-in-law, Elizabeth Tyndall Stokes and husband, Frank of Wilson; her brother-in-law, J.P. Batten of Wilson; nieces, Lisa Bowden Riley, Lorie Batten Hawkins (David), and Kimberly Talton Craig (Ryan); nephews, Michael Galloway, Steve Bowden, Bradley Batten (Brooke), and Allen Kearney and many great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her loving husband, Melvin Clarence Tyndall; sister, Mary Lou Batten; sister-in-law, Mattie Grace Talton; niece, Angie Galloway Reeder, and her brother-in-law, Archie Galloway.
