Sidney Earl Ellis

Sidney Earl Ellis, 91, of Elm City, passed away Saturday. A Graveside Service will be held at 2pm in Maplewood Cemetery on Thursday, March 3, 2022. The family will receive friends prior to the service at Maplewood Cemetery from 1:30-2:00 p.m. Rev. Charles Davis will officiate.

Sidney loved life and most importantly, he loved his family. He was a quiet man, but quick-witted, leaving lasting quotes to many. Sidney had a long insurance career with Life and Casualty which was later named American General. Upon retirement, he and his wife, Peggy, moved to Virginia to live by the water of Kerr Lake. Lovingly known by the grandchildren as “Papa and Granny”, they would visit almost every weekend with a friend or two, this filled their hearts. Sidney and his loving Wife, Peggy, were members of Bethesda Baptist Church in Boydton, Virginia. There he served on several church committees and sang in the choir. They never missed a family gathering or a grandchild’s sporting event. With a deep voice, you could hear his shouts of encouragement to the players. Sidney’s strong family stance will be difficult to fill, but his impression will be forever impressed in our hearts.

Sidney is survived by his loving wife, Peggy Ann Gaither Ellis of the home; daughter, Cynthia Ann Ellis Whitley and husband, James; sons, Sidney “Tim” Earl Ellis, Jr. and wife, Penny and David Wayne Ellis and wife, Donna; grandchildren, Crystal Lester and husband, Rob, Amanda Hinnant and husband, D’Arcy, Chad Ellis and wife, Meagan, Tyler Ellis and wife, Allison, Sidney Earl Ellis III and wife, Mary and Carter Ellis and wife, Ashley, as well as twelve loving great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Bertie Haywood and Theodocia Ellis and siblings, Esther, Margie, B.H., Janice and Nancy.
