Virginia Lamm Hayes

Virginia Lamm Hayes, 103 of Wilson passed away Monday, April 22, 2024.   A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 24, 2024, at Joyner’s Funeral Home, Wilson.  Rev. Walt Tyndall will officiate.  The family will have a private burial.

The family will receive friends Tuesday evening, April 23, 2024, from 6 – 8 p.m. at Joyner’s Funeral Home, 4100 Raleigh Road Parkway, Wilson and other times at the home.

Virginia was born to Grover T. and Bessie Harrison Lamm in Wilson Co. She attended Lamm’s Elementary and Rock Ridge School. Virginia then went to Women’s College of the University of NC (now UNCG) during WWII. She taught first grade in Saratoga and Midway. During this time, she met Jack Hayes of Winston-Salem, married him, and moved to Winston-Salem. Later when her father died, she and Jack returned to Wilson where they welcomed their children, Tempie and Tommy.

Back home Virginia, with the help of her mother, settled into managing the family farms and raising their children. In addition to gardening, cooking, and the usual household responsibilities, Virginia was active in her church and community. Her greatest pleasure was serving in her church, Milbournie Free Will Baptist Church. She played the piano and organ for many years and served in many other capacities such as choir, Ladies Auxiliary, VBS, and etc…

Virginia also served the greater community by her membership in civic organizations such as, the Social Services Board and the Board of Agriculture. She was also a long-time member of the Homemaker organization of the Agriculture Extension Agency. Virginia enjoyed studying painting in Clara Flanagan’s class and quilting with the Peace By Piecing quilt guild. Her mother jokingly referred to her as “Virginia Volunteer” as she worked to raise money for most every cause. Virginia loved her extended family of aunts, uncles, and cousins, and cherished her many friends.

Virginia is survived by her daughter, Tempie Ann Hayes of Wilson, son, Jack Thomas Hayes and wife, Phoebe of Wilson, and her granddaughters, Bailee Hayes of Wilson and Elizabeth Woods of Raleigh.

The family would like to thank her wonderful caregivers: Linda Braswell, Debbie Cox, Barbara Flora, Lisa Johnson, and Debbie Rance. In addition, a special thank you to her special friends who helped her, enjoyed meals and activities with her these last years.
