Betty was an exceptional mother, great teacher and a big influence to all the family. Her sons could not have asked for a better mother or a best friend, that is what she was to them. Her love for her sons and family was always Betty’s heartfelt joy. Every Friday night was always family night. The birth of Benson, her great-grandson, gave her great pleasure during the last year of her life. Betty loved her Lord and served him faithfully and was always blessed by her church family. Betty was very sociable, and she loved working at Barshay’s, Belk’s, and Sue’s Country Store. Betty is survived by her sons, Jim Varnell and wife, Gay of Black Creek, Rev. David Varnell and wife, Madrena of Wilson, and Russ Varnell of Wilson; grandsons, John Varnell and wife, Jamie, and Jacob Varnell; great-grandson, Benson Varnell and her brothers, Gould Flowers, Joseph Flowers and Berry Flowers. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Ted Varnell; parents, Johnnie Floyd and Bettie Lee Edwards Flowers; sister, Ruby Godwin and infant sister, Glory Mae Flowers and her brothers, Ray Flowers and Selby Flowers. The Varnell family would like to express their gratitude and thanks to the caregivers at Wilson Medical Center, ICU Unit for their compassion and loving care.
